Children Ministry

The Children’s Ministry in the Catholic Church plays a vital role in nurturing the faith of young believers. It is dedicated to guiding children in their spiritual growth through prayer, catechism, Bible stories, sacraments preparation, and participation in the life of the Church.

Through age-appropriate lessons, activities, and community engagement, the ministry helps children develop a deeper understanding of God’s love, the teachings of Jesus Christ, and the values of the Catholic faith. It also provides a safe and supportive environment where children can explore their faith, build friendships, and learn to live as disciples of Christ.

By planting seeds of faith early, the Children’s Ministry prepares the next generation of Catholics to grow into active participants in the Church and society, rooted in strong spiritual foundations.

At our parish, St. Teresa, we run two groups within the Children’s Ministry:

  • Little Lights – for children up to and including Year 2. Preschool-aged children must be accompanied by an adult, though any parent or carer is welcome to stay with their child.

  • Leading Lights – for children in Year 3 and above.

Sessions are normally held on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month, but there are exceptions. For example, we adjust the schedule when the First Holy Communion or Confirmation Groups are celebrating special Masses. Extra sessions are also offered during Lent and Advent.

Just before the Liturgy of the Word begins, the children are invited to leave the church with the leaders and go to the meeting room in the Priest’s House or the Parish Hall. During this time, a volunteer catechist leads them in prayers, songs, and Scripture readings that are simplified for children.

The children hear the same readings as the wider assembly but in a way they can understand. A simple main message is shared, and the children are encouraged to talk about it with their parents after Mass.
